For some it's the principle, but I can't say as that's just to much money to even comprehend. No sports person is worth that imo, you have scientists, doctors and others doing wonderful things to help humanity, animals, the environment, it is those who should be making the big bucks not those who can hit, toss or dunk a ball, just my opinion.

I have heard rich, successful business people say that the way to make money is to produce a product/service that is easy to distribute to the masses. It is the distribution that makes a person rich, not the individual product.
Musicians became rich in the 80s because of distribution - MuchMusic, CDs, radio play etc. They are not as successful today because distribution is not as lucrative.
Doctors are superior to athletes, but there distribution is much harder - they can only see one patient at a time and only see a small number of patients per day. So, their income is constrained.
Athletes, on the other hand, have better distribution economics working in their favour. They can play a sport for 2 hours, have it broadcast to 50 million people (distribution favour) and makes millions as a result.

It's also about supply and demand. Why do male athletes make so much more than female athletes....demand is greater for one than the other. I practiced with a professional women's basketball team. The best of them were only slightly more talented than I was at the time. And I was just above average. Nobody would pay to watch "average" entertainers of any type. People want to see the best. That is why the best athletes can command the biggest salaries....why the best artists bring in the most sales of albums and show tickets....why the best doctors can charge much more than the ones who just made it through medical school....why Lamborghini can charge so much more than Ford....why some restaurants cost so much more to eat at than say, McDonalds.
I think that if you hire someone for $16 million a year or take a job for that much, there should be a clear understanding about expectations. If someone were to pay me that much money, I would think that they'd have very high expectations. I would want to know exactly what they are going to demand from me ahead of time. If I were the one to hire someone for that much, I'd want them to know what I expect as well. For that large a chunk of cash, everything should be clear and on the table to avoid these situations.
Me....I choose family and free time over monetary gain. I may not be able to do as many cool things as someone with more cash, but I've done tons of cool little inexpensive things with my family and friends that I wouldn't trade for all the money in the world.
