An insurance friend of mine send me this link. May be useful to some.

THE STAGED car accident scam is growing as perpetrators are getting craftier about entrapping unsuspecting motorists.

Scammers usually meticulously plan their staged car accidents, leaving nothing to chance. You may not even know it was staged, while witnesses may only catch a glimpse and think they saw something they didn't.

AVOID FALLING VICTIM TO A STAGED CAR CRASH SCAMTHE STAGED car accident scam isgrowing as perpetrators are getting craftierabout entrapping unsuspecting motorists.Scammers usually meticulously plantheir staged car accidents, leaving nothingto chance. They practice until they get itright and even if you can see the accidentwas staged, onlookers or witnesses mayonly catch a glimpse and think they seesomething they didn’t.

Here are some common scams:The T-boneThe scammer waits for a car to drivethrough an intersection and then floor it andT-bone your vehicle. When police arrive, thescammer’s helpers will claim you ran a redlight or ran the stop sign. The waveIn this scenario, the scammer will seeyou are trying to switch lanes and theywave you ahead. But when you do switchlanes, they will accelerate and hit your car.

Once police arrive to take the accidentreport, they’ll lie and say you switchedlanes when it was not safe to do so andthey didn’t have time to brake.Dual-turn sideswipeIn this set-up, you have to be in a dualleft-turn lane on the inside and if you areclose to the lane marker, the other driverwill veer into you and claim you came outof your lane and hit them. They may also have “witnesses”stationed at the intersection to back uptheir yarn.

Stopping shortThe scammer will slam on their brakeswhen your car is close behind so that youwill crash into the rear of the vehicle.Swoop and stopIn this scenario, a car will suddenly pullin front of yours and stop. Another vehiclewill simultaneously pull up alongside yourcar, preventing you from swerving to avoidan accident.Furthering the scamsThese scammers and their “passengers”will often also claim injuries they didn’tincur.

They may also be in cahoots withshady doctors and chiropractors, who willinflate their billings and order all types ofmedical services to that end.Others may go to legitimate doctors andclaim back injuries, which are difficult toprove. They may also sue for damages. These car crash scams can leave youpaying for damages you didn’t cause. Theyalso take time. Even if your insurer coversthe crash and the damage to your car, youwill still be without your car for a time anddealing with insurance paperwork and therepair shop.

And the “accident” can lead to higherinsurance premiums for you later..How to avoid accident scamsOne of the best ways to avoid beingthe victim of a fake accident claim is byexercising caution while driving.Tailgating or failing to leave enoughspace between your vehicle and a vehicleahead of you leaves you vulnerable tobecoming the victim of a staged accident. All the driver ahead of you has to do isabruptly stop to cause you to crash into therear of their vehicle.
